# 1 You Can Make Money by “Buying” Domain Names (i.e. Acquiring)

So I’ve fallen prey to this many times, so its time to get real. I’ve said it before, domaining can be a delusional business sometimes because you can buy a domain name, tell yourself you bought it at a discount to its true value, and go home that day booking mental profits, thinking you made money.  Walking tall, feeling good. Your Up!

So you wanted to feel good and have a sale, you kept buying up until

Every .com/.net Domain Name is Worth at Least $150.

Bad News. The $150 is for Verisign,  not you.

And of course, for many of you your names are worth more than $150, but think of every name, every long unpronounceable name, every typo, every 10 number, every name being worth $150.

So $150 per name sounds great. But its for Verisign. That is how much each of your .com and .net domain names are worth to Verisign shareholders. And each stock of Verisign gets $4.00 per year benefit as the money is used to buy back shares. Since 2007 Verisign has used over $6.5 billion to buy back shares.Read the rest

4100 of My Names Didn’t Sell Today

As much as we all remember our sales, the truth that also jumps up at most domainers is almost all of our names don’t sell on a given, day week or even year. And we are tempted to deny that there is anything wrong with that. I do the same, to my detriment.

The actual returns from selling each name in Domain name investing are incredible. But do we use the 90-99% margin on hand registrations and low bid auction bidding to justify probably holding many times more names than we should.  In the premium namespace, sales of 2-50x and … Read the rest

Money.com SOLD You Can Always Pivot with a Great Domain Name

Money.com and Money Magazine have changed hands for about $20 Million.

The New York Post is reported the sale of the Money.com domain name and business.

Seems like mostly a link farm now, but one that still commanded $20 Million, $10 Million above its asking price. That is quite a bit of a fall from the $500 Million it may have been worth at one time.

Certainly the Magazine existed before the domain name; but in todays market having the com gives the buyer power, prestige and as we see in this case, at least a chance of a positive … Read the rest
